I am honored to have the opportunity to comment on Jean Mandler’s feature article about perceptual and conceptual processes in infancy. Her knowledge of the in- creasingly popular field of infant cognition is comprehensive, and her proposal to distinguish two types of categorization, perceptual and conceptual, is novel and in- teresting. I begin with a brief characterization of Mandler’s theoretical position, go on to the ideas she presents in her feature article and some criticisms of them, and fi- nally state my own position with regard to the relation between perception and con- ceptualization. This relation is of interest to both of us, and because her view is structural and mine functional, they are in strong contrast to one another.
